Direct Negotiations Are the Best Way to Reach Agreement Between Azerbaijan and Armenia: Aliyev

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev has stated that direct negotiations between Azerbaijan and Armenia, without intermediaries and obstacles, are considered the best way to achieve a peaceful agreement. This information has been reported by Azerbaijani media.

“I think we should continue to move forward in that direction, if, of course, Armenia is also ready for it,” he noted.

He confirmed that the next round of negotiations between the foreign ministers of the two countries should take place this month in Russia.

It is noteworthy that on April 30, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan and Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Ruben Rubinyan traveled to Washington on a working visit.

On May 1, a meeting took place in Washington between Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov. Prior to that, the U.S. Secretary of State had held bilateral meetings with both Ararat Mirzoyan and Jeyhun Bayramov.

In 2021, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced his readiness to sign a peace treaty with Armenia. In March 2022, Baku presented a five-point proposal to Yerevan regarding the normalization of relations. The Armenian side added adjustments and sent back its version. Since then, there have been several rounds of negotiations between the parties at various levels.
