Video: Armenian Church in Sudan Caught in the Centre of Clashes

In Sudan, the only Armenian church located in the capital Khartoum has been caught in the centre of ongoing clashes for the past three days. The "Arevalk" Twitter page has shared a video from the site. The video shows that despite the fighting surrounding the church, it has not sustained significant damage so far.

It is noteworthy that Sudan's Armenian community is one of the smallest in the diaspora, with only about 15 Armenians living there.

On April 13, Arab television reported that Sudan's Rapid Response Forces had deployed units in the northern city of Merowe, with the Sudanese army demanding their withdrawal. On Thursday night, the Sudanese army made stern statements indicating that the presence of the Rapid Response Forces in Khartoum and several other cities was illegal and took place without coordinating with the armed forces.

According to media reports, the army's statement was prompted by the sudden deployment of the Rapid Response Forces’ units near the airport in Merowe. On April 15, fighting broke out between the Rapid Response Forces and the regular army in Sudan. The Rapid Response Forces claimed to have taken control of the Presidential Palace, the international airports in the capital, as well as the airport in Merowe. The number of casualties from the clashes has reached 100.
