Egypt Secretly Planned to Supply Missiles to Russia
According to a leaked U.S. intelligence document, Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, one of America's closest allies in the Middle East and a major recipient of U.S. aid, recently ordered his subordinates to produce up to 40,000 missiles to be transferred to Russia through smuggling routes. This was reported by The Washington Post.
A portion of the highly sensitive document, dated February 17, summarizes alleged conversations between Sisi and senior Egyptian military officials, also mentioning plans to supply artillery shells and gunpowder to Russia. In the document, Sisi instructs officials to keep the production and supply of missiles secret “to avoid problems with the West.”
The Washington Post obtained the document from a series of leaked images of classified files that were shared on the gaming platform Discord in February and March. The existence of the document had not been previously reported.
This revelation comes at a time when Russia is engaged in war against Ukraine, and both sides are seeking to replenish depleted arsenals. “Egypt’s position is fundamentally based on a commitment not to get involved in this crisis and to maintain equal distance from both sides, while affirming Egypt’s support for the UN Charter and international law in the resolutions of the UN General Assembly,” said Ahmed Abu Zeid, spokesperson for the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, responding to inquiries about the document and the authenticity of the conversations described within it.
“We continue to call on both sides to cease hostilities and reach a negotiated political solution,” he added.
