Azerbaijan Will Not Fulfill Anyone's Demands; This Situation May Last Long: David Babayan
Significant changes are needed in Artsakh, as the current situation may continue for a long time. There is a need to enhance the viability of the state, which primarily means strengthening the security system. This was stated by David Babayan, the special representative of the President of Artsakh for special assignments, in an interview with "Factinfo".
“Artsakh was developing dynamically in a timely manner; no one imagined that such a development could occur. In any case, one thing is clear: we must pay particular attention to the development of the security system. This needs to be done as soon as possible in this situation, and there is a need for the entire Armenian nation to concentrate efforts in this direction. We must be prepared for any development,” said Babayan.
Babayan does not see the likelihood of unblocking Artsakh as a result of pressure from any external force or international organization. Hence, he emphasizes the necessity of realistically assessing the situation and making pragmatic decisions.
“We must accept the situation and take steps that will help us withstand it. We need to step out of the internal political discourse. If we delve into that, we will lose everything. There are forces that are trying to give an internal political tint to the issue of Artsakh's status, to view it in that context, and to close the issue. That would be the last blow to Artsakh, and if we lose Artsakh, we will lose everything. We cannot afford to allow that,” our interlocutor noted.
Babayan warns that we are in a critical situation; instead of counting the days of the blockade, we must, at least for a while, set aside internal political conflicts, refrain from yielding to external forces, and unite around Artsakh.
“For a certain period, we all need to be Artsakh-centered—here, in Armenia, and in the Diaspora. To avoid losing Artsakh, we need to develop short-term and medium-term measures. If we can overcome the current challenges, we will emerge with a strengthened immune system; if not, we will face destruction,” Babayan said, adding that not everything is lost yet, as there are opportunities for salvation.
