Historic Achievement: Armenian Youth Weightlifting Team Takes First Place at World Championship

The Armenian youth weightlifting team has secured the first team position at the World Championship for M17 age groups held in Durrës, Albania. Armenian young lifters won 6 medals in the total lift category.

67 kg weight class winner Sergey Barsikyants was crowned the champion, while Gagik Mkrtchyan in the +102 kg weight class took home the silver medal. Valerik Movsisyan (89 kg) and Ashot Margaryan (96 kg) also became bronze medalists.

In the girls’ competition, Anna Amroyan (76 kg) and Emma Poghosyan (81 kg) showed the third best results in the total lift category. Sergey Barsikyants achieved the winner's title with a total lift result of 275 kg (128+147), surpassing the second-place athlete by 5 kg. In the clean and jerk, Barsikyants secured a small gold medal with a result of 128 kg, while recording the third result of 175 kg in the snatch.

Gagik Mkrtchyan achieved a total lift of 313 kg (139+174) and won the silver medal. In the clean and jerk, Mkrtchyan also earned a small bronze and a small silver medal in the snatch.

Valerik Movsisyan took third place with a total lift of 306 kg (140+166), earning a bronze medal. He was awarded a small bronze medal in the clean and jerk and came fourth in the snatch competition.

Ashot Margaryan claimed the bronze medal in the total lift with a result of 300 kg (137+163), also receiving small bronze medals in both clean and jerk and snatch competitions.

Another representative of Armenia, Narek Mkrtchyan (73 kg), earned a small bronze medal at the World Championship, coming in third in the clean and jerk with a result of 158 kg.

Ana Amroyan (76 kg) became a bronze medalist in the total lift with a result of 204 kg (88+116), finishing fifth in the snatch and showing the fourth best result in the clean and jerk.

Emma Poghosyan secured the bronze medal in the 81 kg category with a total lift of 221 kg (98+123), also earning small bronze medals in both clean and jerk and snatch.

It’s noteworthy that the Armenian men’s team was coached by Yervand Kirakosyan and Harutyun Yeghoyan at the World Championship. According to coach Harutyun Yeghoyan, the athletes' results are historic and unprecedented.

“This is indeed an unprecedented event in the history of Armenian weightlifting. We were represented in almost all weight categories. It’s remarkable that we participated in such a major competition with this lineup for the first time. This is the result of years of hard work from coaches and athletes,” he stated.
