Russian and Belarusian Tennis Players Allowed to Compete in Wimbledon
The organizers of Wimbledon, the Lawn Tennis Association of Great Britain and the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), have permitted athletes from Russia and Belarus to participate in the tournament. This information was reported by the LTA's press service.
“We know that Russian and Belarusian players participated last year as neutrals. We have agreed that all Russian and Belarusian players and support staff who wish to participate in our 2023 events must sign neutrality declarations,” the statement said.
They added that this aligns with the guidelines of the UK government and is consistent with approaches used in other sports. As such, Russian and Belarusian players will be allowed to compete in tournaments held in the UK, including those in Queen's, Eastbourne, Birmingham, and Nottingham.
However, athletes from these countries are prohibited from providing any support for the special military operation in Ukraine in various forms. Those receiving funding from "Russia and Belarus, or from companies controlled or administered by those countries" will not be allowed to participate in the tournament.
“The conditions have been carefully developed through constructive dialogue with the UK government, the LTA, and international organizations interested in tennis, and are in line with the government guidelines published for sports organizations in the UK,” the statement concluded.
