For the Second Year in a Row, a Man is Named ‘Woman of the Year’ in the U.S.
For the second consecutive year, a man has been recognized as the ‘Woman of the Year’ in the United States, according to American media reports. USA Today has released the list of women of the year for 2023, which includes prominent women from all 50 states, as well as several national award-winners.
Among these successful women is Lee Finken, the first transgender member of the Minnesota House of Representatives from the Democratic Party, who has also claimed this title.
According to Washington Examiner, this candidate’s selection from Minnesota is noteworthy as they have lived the majority of their conscious life as a man, transitioning to transgender only 30 years later, in 2017. The site further explains that this choice is controversial because there were many deserving women in Minnesota who might have been selected for the title.
Some of these women are truly remarkable; for example, Minnesota is home to the renowned Mayo Clinic, one of the world's top medical institutions. Dr. Robin Patel, a woman, received the 2022 Mayo Clinic Distinguished Investigator Award for her lifetime significant contribution to research on periprosthetic joint infections, antimicrobial resistance, and advanced diagnostic microbiology.
In terms of women in politics, in the latest elections, 25-year-old Zainab Mohamed became one of the first Black women and the youngest woman elected to the Minnesota Senate.
It is noteworthy that in 2022, the title of ‘Woman of the Year’ was awarded to transgender Rachel Levine.
