Photos: Despite Turkish Pressure, Memorial Dedicated to the Armenian Genocide Opens in Israel
A memorial dedicated to the Armenian Genocide has been inaugurated in the city of Haifa, Israel. The ceremony took place yesterday, despite pressure exerted by the Turkish embassy in Tel Aviv. This was reported by the Armenian National Committee of Jerusalem.
Among those present at the event were Haifa Mayor Einat Kalisch-Rotem, members of the city council, Armenia's ambassador to Israel Arman Hakobyan, representatives from the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem, the Armenian National Committee of Jerusalem, members of the Armenian community in Israel, and representatives of various communities in Haifa.
It should be noted that earlier it was reported that Turkey's ambassador, Shakir Özkan Torunlar, had sent an official letter to Israel's Minister of Culture and Sports, Miki Zohar, requesting assistance in preventing the installation of the monument.
