Germany Concerned About Instability at Armenia-Azerbaijan Border: Scholz to Aliyev

Currently, it is of central importance for Germany to activate efforts aimed at the peaceful resolution of the conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan, stated German Chancellor Olaf Scholz during a joint press conference with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.

Scholz noted that Germany is concerned about the unstable situation at the Armenia-Azerbaijan border. “Such a situation cannot persist for long. There is a risk of further escalation. Recent events in the past months and weeks indicate this. Naturally, we are also mindful of the humanitarian situation on the ground. Our mutual objective should be to find a long-term and viable solution to this conflict for the benefit of the people in Nagorno-Karabakh,” he said, adding that the peaceful resolution of the conflict should be based on the preservation of the territorial integrity of Armenia and Azerbaijan.

Scholz emphasized the importance of ensuring the safety of the population in Nagorno-Karabakh and the protection of the rights of all citizens of the two states, including minorities, in accordance with international norms and obligations. “Therefore, Germany supports the mediating efforts of the President of the European Council, Charles Michel. A part of this is the European peacekeeping mission. I welcome President Aliyev's meeting with his Armenian counterparts. There is a unified will to resolve the conflict through peaceful means,” he stated.
