Romanian Recognized as the State Language in Moldova

The Moldovan parliament has adopted a bill in the first reading proposing amendments to all legislative acts, including the Constitution of the Republic. According to Interfax, the proposed changes will replace the term "Moldovan language" with "Romanian." The authors cite three rulings from the Constitutional Court, including one from December 5, 2013. According to this document, the state language of Moldova is Romanian.

The bill has faced serious criticism from the opposition Bloc of Communists and Socialists, whose members have protested by barricading the parliament's podium with banners.

According to the Constitution, amendments to the Basic Law can be approved by a two-thirds majority of the deputies and can only be registered no sooner than six months after and with a positive conclusion from the Constitutional Court. Furthermore, the Constitution states that it cannot be amended during a state of emergency, siege, or martial law.

Currently, Article 13 of the Moldovan Constitution states that the state language of the Republic of Moldova is "the Moldovan language, which operates on the basis of the Latin script." It is worth noting that some contemporary linguists consider Moldovan and Romanian to be different names for the same language.
