Greek Transport Minister Resigns After Train Disaster

Greece's Minister of Transport, Kostas Karamanlis, has announced his resignation following his return from the site of the tragic train accident in Tempi. This was reported by the newspaper Kathimerini.

According to him, when something so "tragic" happens, it is impossible to continue living as if it did not occur. The minister emphasized that a crucial element of democracy is that citizens trust the political system, which is called political responsibility.

“For this reason, I resign from the position of Minister of Infrastructure and Transport. This is what I consider my duty to do as a minimum sign of respect for the memory of the unjustly departed, as well as to bear responsibility for the mistakes of Greece’s state and political system,” said the minister.

Earlier, the head of the railway station in Greece was arrested following the collision of passenger and freight trains in Tempi.

On the night of March 1, near the city of Larissa, a passenger train collided with a freight train. The impact caused a fire, and three carriages derailed.

As of the latest reports, 36 people have died, and 66 have been hospitalized, six of whom are in intensive care.
