Armenia Has Its Fundamental Position in Peace Treaty Negotiations: Khandanyan

Armenia has its fundamental positions in the peace treaty negotiations. As part of and beyond these negotiations, Armenia's demand is for Azerbaijan to withdraw its forces from the territories occupied by Armenia. This was stated by the chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee of the National Assembly, Sargis Khandanyan, during a press conference addressing the questions concerning negotiations.

“Armenia has its fundamental positions. These fundamental positions, for the most part, fall under the protection of Armenia's sovereignty and independence, as well as in the context of any party's non-interference in Armenia's internal affairs,” Khandanyan said.

When asked about the specific points on which Armenia and Azerbaijan have yet to reach agreement, the MP did not elaborate, noting that negotiators should discuss such matters.

“Nevertheless, Armenia is committed to continuing the negotiations. And we hope that the moment will come soon, and we will have the opportunity to sign a peace treaty with Azerbaijan,” he noted.

In response to the question of whether there is a precondition for Azerbaijanis to withdraw from Armenia's sovereign territory, Khandanyan stated, “This precondition is not only within the framework of peace negotiations but is, in general, Armenia's demand for Azerbaijan to withdraw its forces from the occupied parts of Armenia.”
