There is General Agreement on Certain Points of the Peace Treaty: Alen Simonian

In the peace treaty, there are already points on which Armenia and Azerbaijan have reached an agreement. This was stated today by the Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly, Alen Simonian, during a conversation with reporters.

Simonain did not specify which issues were being discussed, insisting that revealing them could hinder the overall process.

When asked what provisions related to Artsakh are included in the peace treaty, Simonian responded, “In my understanding, the issue of Artsakh should not be expressed in any way in the agreement between the two countries. We need to understand whether it serves the interests of our country, our people, and the people of Artsakh to include anything about Artsakh in this document.”

He assured that this does not mean that Armenia is retreating in any way from protecting the interests of Artsakh and the rights of its people.

“We just need to understand whether the November 9 agreement satisfies us in terms of securing those rights or not. By introducing a new provision into the peace treaty, are we not nullifying the important affirmations found in the November 9 agreement?” Simonian said.

He added that discussions are currently underway, and the final text is not yet known, but he assured that as a result of the discussions, “no mines will be laid” under the sovereignty, statehood, and territorial integrity of Armenia.

It should be noted that in 2021, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev announced willingness to sign a peace treaty with Armenia. In March 2022, Baku presented Yerevan with its five-point proposal for the resolution of relations. The Armenian side made amendments and sent back its version. Since then, several rounds of negotiations have taken place between the parties at various levels.
