Tbilisi Denies EU Demand to Transfer Saakashvili to Poland

The Minister of Justice of Georgia, Rati Bregadze, has denied reports from certain media outlets suggesting that the European Union has requested Georgian authorities to transfer the imprisoned former president Mikheil Saakashvili to Poland for medical treatment.

Speaking on the Georgian television channel Imedi on Tuesday, Bregadze clarified that such an issue was not discussed during a meeting the previous day with the head of the EU delegation, Pavel Kherchinski, and the Swedish ambassador, Ulrik Tidestrom.

Regarding the EU's call, the text of which was conveyed during the meeting, he stated that it pertained to concerns about Saakashvili's health condition. “During the meeting, we informed them what measures the Georgian state is taking to protect Saakashvili's rights and provide him with medical care,” he said. “Our agency has nothing to hide; on the contrary, we are determined to provide the public with as much information as possible in any form,” the minister added.
