Putin Signs Law Limiting Use of Foreign Words in Russian

Russian leader Vladimir Putin has signed a law that disallows the use of foreign words when employing the Russian language as the state language, except for terms that lack commonly used analogs in Russian.

The document has been published on the official internet portal of legal information.

According to the law, "When using the Russian language as the state language of the Russian Federation, it is prohibited to use words and expressions that do not conform to the norms of modern Russian literary language (including obscene language), except for foreign words that do not have common analogs in Russian and the list of which is included in normative dictionaries."

On February 16, the State Duma adopted a government bill regarding the monitoring of compliance with the norms of the Russian literary language by officials and citizens.

Previously, Putin had included the fight against excessive foreign vocabulary in issues of cultural state policy.
