Remains of 26 wild northern deer have been discovered in northern Sakhalin, prompting an investigation by the prosecutor's office. This was reported by РИА Новости, referencing the Sakhalin regional forest management and hunting agency.
Forest management employees found the remains on February 24 during a wildlife protection and conservation operation in a remote area of the Okhinsky district. Preparations are currently being made to submit materials to law enforcement agencies. Poachers face criminal liability with mandatory compensation for the damage caused to nature, stated a representative of the agency.
The representative also noted that the population of Sakhalin wild northern deer is listed in the regional Red Book, with approximately two thousand specimens remaining in the region. Earlier, videos appeared on social media and local news outlets showing the remains of the slain deer. According to the author of the video, poachers killed 25 animals, including 13 females, in the Okha region. The Sakhalin prosecutor's office has confirmed that an investigation has been organized regarding this fact.
