EU Fails to Agree on 10th Sanctions Package Against Russia

The European Union has been unable to agree on the 10th sanctions package against Russia, particularly concerning the export of nuclear fuel and diamonds, which amounts to nearly 2 billion euros annually.

According to a source in one of the countries' diplomatic departments, these sanctions were expected to be implemented by February 24. “In the final proposals voiced by the European Commission, there is no mention of restrictions on the export of diamonds and nuclear fuel from Russia to EU countries, nor any other forms of cooperation in the nuclear sector. These were the only proposals for sanctions against Russian exports that provide real income to Moscow, which is estimated at nearly 2 billion euros,” the statement reported.

It has been clarified that due to the lack of urgency, the EU did not have sufficient time to negotiate this draft, which was supposed to be adopted by the anniversary of the start of the special military operation in Ukraine.

Previously, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Péter Szijjártó stated that Budapest would do everything possible to ensure that the new EU sanctions package against Russia does not include restrictions on oil supplies and cooperation with Moscow in the nuclear sector.
