VIDEO: Flowing Lava in Indonesia Creates Six Rivers

The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has reported an eruption of the Karangetang volcano on the island of Siau, located off the coast of North Sulawesi, Indonesia.

“The slope of the mountain is quite steep, thus the material piles descend rapidly,” said Octori Prambada, the PVMBG's volcanic coordinator, during a virtual press conference.

According to the local PVMBG observatory, the flowing lava has created six rivers, with the current lava flow measuring approximately 1000 meters in length and moving towards the Batang, Batuawang, and Beha Barat rivers. The volcanology center has raised its risk classification to level three.

From February 2 to February 7, experts observed passive emissions of ash and steam from both the main and northern craters, reaching heights of 50-100 meters.
