US Downed Chinese Balloon Equipped with Surveillance Technology, NYT

The Chinese balloon that was shot down over the United States was equipped with surveillance and data collection devices. This was reported by The New York Times, citing a Department of State document.

Lockheed U-2 reconnaissance aircraft were able to photograph the balloon while it was in the air, and their analysis showed the presence of equipment, including surveillance antennas.

Additionally, this equipment does not conform to what is typically found on weather balloons. The Hill, citing a representative from the State Department, clarified that these antennas could likely receive signals and determine the location of objects.

It is still unclear what data the balloon collected. The US intends to investigate the object's technology. According to Bloomberg, it had Western-made components with English markings.

Recall that on February 3, the Pentagon announced the detection of a surveillance balloon in US airspace. Later, China officially recognized that it was their civilian balloon, which had inadvertently deviated from its course due to wind. On February 4, US military forces shot down the device over South Carolina.
