Armed Robbery Against Tourists: Gyumri City Council Member Arrested
Agasi Matevosyan, a member of the Gyumri City Council and a relative of former Deputy Prime Minister Hambardzum Matevosyan, has been arrested on charges of armed robbery against tourists.
According to reports, on February 3 at around 06:45 AM, a citizen reported to the police division in Aghuryan that roughly around 03:00 AM, he was near a restaurant complex in Gyumri with his girlfriend when they were approached by a vehicle of 'Niva' brand. Individuals who exited the vehicle, numbering three, began to search the couple.
The man reported that they took his wallet and phone, while they also seized his girlfriend's passport and phone.
After an argument with the tourists, one of the assailants took 910 euros from the man's wallet and fled the scene.
Joint efforts by patrol officers and personnel from the Aghuryan precinct led to the discovery and arrest of four men on Tehleryan Street in Gyumri, including the 'Niva' vehicle.
Agasi Matevosyan is reported to be the nephew of former Deputy Prime Minister Hambardzum Matevosyan, with media stating that he is the mayor's brother. In response to a query from 'Factinfo', the Prosecutor General's Office reported that Agasi Matevosyan and three other individuals involved in robbing tourists in Gyumri have been remanded in custody for two months.
They face charges under Article 252, Part 2, Clause 3 of the Criminal Code of the Republic of Armenia concerning robbery committed by a group of individuals acting in concert and under Article 456, Part 2, Clause 1 for the theft, embezzlement, destruction, damage, or concealment of documents, seals, stamps, or vehicle registration plates carried out by a group of individuals acting in collusion.
