Why Air Defense Systems Have Been Installed on the Roofs of Moscow: BBC News

The American Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reports in its daily update about the possible deployment of air defense systems in Moscow, though it does not link this to the threat of attacks from Ukraine.

In the past week, numerous photos and videos have surfaced on Russian social media showing that air defense systems have been installed on the roofs of certain buildings in Moscow. The press secretary of the President of Russia, Dmitry Peskov, declined to comment on these reports.

However, according to ISW, some Russian military bloggers have reacted positively to the release of images showing air defense systems. They appreciated that Muscovites would finally understand that a “heavy war is underway.”

According to anonymous sources cited by Bloomberg, the installation of air defense systems in Moscow began following drone attacks on the military airfields of Dyagilevo in the Ryazan region and Engels in the Saratov region.

As reported by the BBC, the installations in Moscow mainly consist of the “Pantsir” system, which is primarily designed to prevent attacks by flying enemy devices.
