Over 1100 People Detained Following Unrest in Brazil
In Brazil, law enforcement has detained over 1,100 individuals for participating in the violent upheavals that occurred last Sunday. This information was reported by the Federal Police's press service on Wednesday.
“On the evening of January 11, the Federal Police completed operations related to the judicial decisions stemming from the events of January 8. A total of 1,843 people were brought to the National Police Academy building. The Federal Police interrogated and arrested 1,159 individuals, who were then sent for forensic examinations and subsequently to correctional facilities,” the report stated.
More than 200 people were apprehended on Sunday, according to investigators. It was noted that by the conclusion of the legal proceedings, nearly 700 individuals would wait in freedom, including the elderly, those with health issues, homeless individuals, and parents with children.
All detainees' identities have been confirmed, and they will all, including those released, face charges for “terrorism, criminal conspiracy, offenses against the democratic legal system, attempts at a coup d'état, persecution, and incitement.”
The press service of law enforcement emphasized that all operational actions involving 550 Federal Police personnel were conducted in the constant presence of doctors, lawyers, and human rights defenders.
The detainees were provided with four meals a day, water, and medical assistance as needed. Assistance was requested by 433 citizens, and 33 individuals were transferred to medical facilities.
