Turkish Modular Base at the Foot of Ararat: What is the Purpose?
Last week, information emerged regarding the deployment of a Turkish modular base at the foot of Mount Ararat. However, this information has been somewhat distorted in various media outlets, suggesting that Turkey is establishing a military base near the border with Armenia.
The purpose of constructing a modular base on Mount Ararat by Turkey is to combat Kurdish guerilla forces. This opinion was expressed by military expert Narek Nersisyan during a conversation with Sputnik Armenia, commenting on the news regarding the Turkish modular base's deployment at the foot of Mount Ararat.
Earlier, media reports circulated that the military camp is located at the border with Armenia; however, geographically, the base is on the opposite side of the Great and Little Ararat Mountains (from Armenia's perspective). It is much closer to the border with Iran (less than 8 km) than the Armenian border (about 35 km).
The base is situated approximately 2100 meters above the village of Gyungoren. According to Turkish officials, it is being established for the 'fight against terrorism.' For this reason, the preparedness level has been checked by local gendarmerie and police chiefs.
It should be noted that this region is known for the ongoing clashes between Turkish forces and Kurdish units, particularly members of the Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).
Additionally, the practice of establishing such and other outposts is also applied by Turkish authorities in other Kurdish-populated areas where the PKK is active.
As the expert points out, there are terrorist threats in the areas adjacent to Mount Ararat, and the aim of constructing the modular base is to neutralize those risks.
