January 1st in Moscow Could Be the Hottest in the Last 50 Years
Weather forecasts indicate that an unusually warm weather will prevail in the Moscow region for the New Year, particularly in late December and early January. Meteorologists report that the temperature on January 1 could exceed a 50-year record. According to RTVI, residents of the capital are promised warm, snow-laden weather on December 31 and January 1.
The air temperature is expected to range from 0 to +2 degrees Celsius, with January 1 seeing temperatures rise to +2 to +5 degrees, accompanied by snowfall and, in some areas, rain. Roman Vilfand, the scientific leader of the Russian Hydrometeorological Center, elaborated on the forecasts.
“In the 144 years of observations, the highest temperature recorded on January 1 was exactly 50 years ago, on January 1, 1973, at +4.2 degrees,” he explained. The upcoming New Year may witness temperatures surpassing this record, reaching up to five degrees Celsius. At the same time, the snow cover is expected to reach 30-32 cm, allowing for activities such as snowball fights and building snowmen on New Year's Eve,” added the meteorologist.
