The most terrifying snowstorm in the U.S. has claimed at least 57 lives, according to NBC News. The broadcaster notes that temperatures have sharply decreased across the country, while massive snow drifts have complicated travel and confined people to their homes.

According to NBC, fatalities have been reported in 12 states: Colorado, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, Tennessee, and Wisconsin. The Erie County Medical Examiner's Office reported that 27 of the deaths in the county are directly related to the snowstorm. They explained that many died from heart-related issues while shoveling snow, while others were found deceased in their cars.
