France's head coach Didier Deschamps delivered a short and emotional motivational speech to the players in the locker room during halftime of the World Cup final. The video has been circulated on the internet. Up until the 80th minute, France was trailing Argentina 0-2.

“Do you understand the difference? The difference is that they are playing in this final, and we are not,” Deschamps said, striking the table.

Forward Kylian Mbappe also had a brief speech. “This is the World Cup final, the game of a lifetime. In any case, it can't get any worse. We are going back to the field and will not allow the opponent to play like that anymore. We can get back into the fight. This kind of thing happens once every four years,” Mbappe's words were quoted by RMC Sport.

Mbappe went on to score a hat-trick in the final. Ultimately, France lost in a penalty shootout (2-2, 1-1, penalties 2-4).
