Borrell Urges Iran to Halt Military Support for Russia
The head of European Union (EU) diplomacy has urged his Iranian counterpart to immediately cease military support for Russia and ease domestic repression within the country. This meeting between Josep Borrell and Hossein Amir-Abdollahian took place in Jordan against the backdrop of strained Iran-EU relations.
Although negotiations for the restoration of the nuclear deal have hit a deadlock, Borrell emphasized that Brussels will continue to work towards achieving results. "We have agreed to keep the communication lines open and restore the #JCPOA based on the Vienna negotiations," Borrell tweeted, referring to talks that stalled in September.
For his part, Amir-Abdollahian stated that Western powers should adopt a 'constructive' approach to revitalize the 2015 nuclear agreement. In the decisive phase of negotiations for the restoration of the nuclear deal, Iran has responded to the protests that began in the country with unprecedented brutality. Additionally, the West accuses Tehran of selling drones to Russia, which, according to Kyiv, are being used by Russian forces to target civilian infrastructure.
