VIDEO: Snowfall in Moscow Exceeds 1989 Record; Flights Canceled

At Moscow's Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Sheremetyevo airports, 50 flights have been delayed and 13 canceled.

According to data at 8:29 AM Moscow time, Vnukovo reported 20 delayed flights and nine cancellations. Domodedovo had 22 flights delayed and two canceled, while Sheremetyevo experienced eight delayed flights and two cancellations.

Earlier, leading specialist at the Phobos weather center, Evgeny Tishkovets, told RIA Novosti that nearly one third of the monthly precipitation fell in just one day in Moscow, with 50 percent in the Moscow region. He noted that up to ten millimeters of snow could fall in the capital during the day, and the daily maximum precipitation record for December 18 could be exceeded.

It has been reported that the snowfall in Moscow has surpassed the 1989 record. According to statistics, there has never been such a thick layer of snow on this day in meteorological history. The last time a similar occurrence was recorded was in 1989, with 31 centimeters, and in 1993, with 30 centimeters.
