US Congress Members Urge Biden to Act on Lachin Corridor Closure

Under the leadership of United States Congressman Adam Schiff, around three dozen congress members have sent a letter to President Joe Biden, urging him to take decisive steps to ensure the safety of the Armenian population in Artsakh.

According to Armenpress, the letter states that since December 12, Azerbaijan has kept the only road connecting Artsakh to Armenia and the outside world, known as the Lachin corridor, closed, disrupting the free movement of 120,000 Armenians and preventing the transportation of food, medicine, and other essential supplies.

"If this situation continues, a humanitarian disaster with potentially tragic consequences will become inevitable. Furthermore, Azerbaijan's actions directly violate the trilateral statement from November 9, 2020, which included a commitment to ensure the safe passage of civilians, vehicles, and cargo in both directions along the road known as the Lachin corridor," the congress members stated.

They highlighted that, despite repeated calls from congress members to provide much-needed humanitarian aid to the people of Artsakh, the U.S. administration has so far not provided adequate assistance, making urgent action from the administration more necessary than ever.

"We call on the administration to use every possible tool to ensure the safety of the people of Artsakh – now and in the future, including halting financial support to Azerbaijan and imposing sanctions. We cannot allow Azerbaijan's policy of aggression and threats to continue," the U.S. congress members concluded.
