Ukraine Asks the US for Cluster Munitions

Ukraine is requesting cluster munitions from the United States, but the White House has yet to move forward with this request. This information was reported by American CNN, citing its sources.

At the same time, the media outlet states that the Biden administration is not ready to fulfill this wish. Cluster munitions were banned by an international convention adopted in 2010; however, neither Ukraine, the United States, nor Russia have joined the convention.

Moreover, a certain percentage of these munitions do not detonate, posing a danger to civilian populations for many years to come.

Previously, high-ranking US officials publicly declared that they plan to provide Ukrainians with as much support as necessary to give them an advantage at the negotiating table with Russia, if it comes to that. However, Western military equipment is not infinite, and as the stockpile of munitions dwindles, Ukrainians have told the US they could use cluster munitions that are currently gathering dust in storage.

According to the television channel, the Biden administration has not ruled out this option as a last resort if conditions begin to deteriorate dangerously. At the same time, sources emphasize that the proposal still needs to undergo serious discussion, largely due to Congressional legislation that prohibits the transfer of cluster munitions from the US.
