VIDEO: What the World's Largest Active Volcano Looks Like Today
Reports and updates regarding the eruption of Mauna Loa began emerging at the end of November. This immediately caught the attention of experts from around the globe, as it is uniquely significant being the largest active volcano on Earth.
New footage reveals the status of the megavolcano in December, according to Space.com. A fissure has opened in its caldera, from which lava flows have begun to erupt up to 40 meters high, rolling down the slopes.
This eruption marks the first occurrence since 1984. Lava flows have been observed 8 kilometers away from Hilo, one of the most populated cities on the Hawaiian Islands.
