Brutal Murder Turns Common; Appeal Filed in Cadet’s Murder Case

In the case of the murder of Army Institute cadet Haykaz Barseghyan, the victim's side has filed an appeal with the Court of Appeals against the verdict. This was stated by Haykaz Barseghyan's father, Arkadi Barseghyan, in an interview with NEWS.am.

“I do not agree with that verdict. It was repeatedly emphasized during the court hearings that the defendants were young, but my son was also young. I am not surprised that in our country these individuals can even be released. It turns out that as brutal murders occur in Armenia, in the end they are treated as ordinary murders,” said Arkadi Barseghyan.

It is noteworthy that the Yerevan Court of General Jurisdiction, chaired by Judge Davit Harutyunyan, announced the verdict on April 5, sentencing Gnel Teyvosyan, Norik Sahakyan, Vache Sahakyan, and Movses Azaryan to 15 years of imprisonment for the murder of Barseghyan. The court requalified the charge against the defendants, which was based on point 5, 7, and 10 of part 2 of Article 104 of the RA Criminal Code, for murder with particular brutality motivated by hooliganism, and recognized them guilty under point 7 of part 2 of Article 104 of the RA Criminal Code for murder by a group of persons. Among the defendants, Vache Sahakyan was acquitted of one of the charges under part 1 of Article 359.

According to the indictment, on January 29, 2015, between 02:00 and 03:00, they brutally murdered cadet Haykaz Barseghyan in the barracks' dormitory, and then, to conceal the evidence, hanged his body from a horizontal bar in a gym, leaving a note under his name suggesting it was a suicide. The defendants do not admit their guilt.
