What is the Poverty Level in Armenia According to 2021 Data: Statistics
In 2021, the poverty level in Armenia was 26.5 percent, slightly lower than the previous year. However, compared to 2019, poverty has increased by 0.1 percent. Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this during the government meeting on December 1. Regarding extreme poverty, Pashinyan noted that there has been a 0.1 percent increase compared to 2019, and a 0.8 percent increase compared to 2020. According to the Prime Minister, these indicators show that the anti-crisis measures taken during the coronavirus pandemic have been targeted and served their purpose. Since in 2021, when there were no pandemic support measures, the poverty indicator increased. He stated, “Our belief is that poverty can only be overcome through work; there is no other alternative to eliminating it. Currently, there is a labor shortage issue in our country’s labor market. Historically, unemployment has reached a minimum in our country. We are continuously receiving alerts from the private sector that they have problems finding employees.”
Responding to the Prime Minister's inquiry, Minister of Labor and Social Affairs Narek Mkrtchyan announced that there has been a reduction in the unemployment rate to below 13 percent in the second quarter of 2022. “Currently, there are 3,260 job vacancies registered by the Unified Social Service, but according to other data from the statistical committee, there are 9,800 job vacancies,” Mkrtchyan stated, adding that on the other hand, there are registered unemployed individuals, numbering 50,400 (which is 8,000 less compared to 2021).
