Corruption Prevention Commission Has Initiated Proceedings Against Several Lawmakers

According to the "Hayakak" newspaper, the Corruption Prevention Commission has initiated proceedings against several lawmakers from the National Assembly's ruling Civil Contract party and the opposition Armenia faction on the grounds of apparent violations of the incompatibility requirement.

It has been reported that the lawmakers have already received notifications from the commission informing them of the proceedings against them. The incompatibility requirement regarding a member of parliament's mandate, including the prohibition of engaging in entrepreneurial activities, is established by the Constitution of the Republic of Armenia.

The Commission has found violations regarding the activities of the lawmakers, as they are also engaged in business activities, which is incompatible with their parliamentary role. So, who are the lawmakers facing these proceedings?

According to information received by the newspaper, proceedings have been initiated against Gegham Nazaryan from the Armenia faction and Khachatur Sukiasyan from the Civil Contract faction, along with one more member from the ruling party, whose proceedings are currently ongoing, and we will present more details about this individual soon.

In a conversation with the "Hayakak" newspaper, Gegham Nazaryan confirmed that he received a notification from the commission regarding the proceedings against him, stating that it was a misunderstanding. He plans to attend the hearing scheduled for the proceedings and clarify everything.

Moreover, Khachatur Sukiasyan's press secretary, Anna Mkrtchyan, also informed the newspaper that they received the notification and consider the situation to be a result of a misunderstanding, which they are currently addressing with their lawyers.

Additionally, the "Hayakak" newspaper learned that the declarations of 107 lawmakers are being scrutinized, and it is possible that this list will not be exhaustive, as further violations might be uncovered regarding other lawmakers.

What happens after the proceedings? The lawmakers will have the opportunity to present their explanations, after which the commission will draw conclusions and affirm whether they have indeed violated the legislative and constitutional requirements of incompatibility. This would mean that they could at least be stripped of their mandates; in a worst-case scenario, a criminal case might also be initiated.
