VIDEO: Sharp Increase in Coronavirus Cases in China Amid Ongoing Protests
Protests have erupted in China against the "zero tolerance" policy towards the coronavirus. In an interview with RBC, experts have expressed that these protests could encourage the authorities to reconsider the complete lockdown concept until spring next year. Media outlets are releasing footage showing the severe and somewhat alarming situation created in the country due to the virus.
On November 28, China reported another peak in the number of coronavirus infections, with over 40,000 confirmed cases. This number has been rising for the fifth consecutive day. At the same time, on Sunday, thousands of Chinese citizens took to the streets of major cities to express their dissent against Beijing's “zero tolerance” policy on COVID-19, under which cities could face strict lockdowns in case of worsening situations.
For instance, in April 2022, Shanghai saw a daily infection rate of about 30,000 new cases, leading to a two-month lockdown in the 25 million population city. Currently, major cities in China, including Beijing, Chengdu, and Shanghai, are under partial lockdowns (specifically, schools in the Chinese capital have moved to remote learning), and there have been heightened requirements for coronavirus testing.
