Assisting Ukraine Is Costly for the West, Stoltenberg Says

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg has admitted that supporting Ukraine in the ongoing conflict is costly for the West, but emphasized the need to "maintain and increase" assistance to Kyiv. This opinion was expressed during an interview with the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag on Sunday.

"The rise in food and energy prices speaks to difficult times for many households across Europe," Stoltenberg said.

However, he added that continued support for Kyiv is essential. In this context, the NATO chief praised Berlin's supplies of weapons to Ukraine. "Germany's decisive support is very important," Stoltenberg asserted. "We all need to increase our assistance to Ukraine," he stated, "this will help Ukrainians defend their right to self-defense."

At the same time, the NATO Secretary General noted that "it may be possible to strengthen Ukraine's positions at the negotiating table if it receives military support." "The best way to support peace is to support Ukraine," he concluded.
