Hungarian Prime Minister's Scarf Causes Scandal; Romania's Foreign Ministry Responds
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has found himself in the midst of a scandal after appearing with a scarf depicting the image of 'Greater Hungary,' which includes parts of Ukraine and Romania. Official Bucharest has already responded, calling the behavior of the government leader 'unacceptable.'
Orbán wore the fans' scarf when meeting football player Balázs Dzsudzsák, who was holding a farewell match for the national football team, according to obozrevatel.com. The Prime Minister shared images from the meeting on his Facebook page.
Orbán's scarf has drawn the attention of German liberal politician and Member of the European Parliament Daniel Freund. He commented, 'The Prime Minister of Hungary is wearing a scarf with a map of Greater Hungary; how 'encouraging' this is for Hungary's neighbors.'
Romania's Foreign Ministry has already reacted to Orbán's actions. They conveyed 'strong dissatisfaction' to the Hungarian ambassador in Bucharest regarding Orbán's move. They noted that 'such a gesture clearly contradicts the open atmosphere and the resumption of bilateral dialogue in light of the recent consultations that Romania's Foreign Minister held in Budapest with both his Hungarian counterpart and the Prime Minister of Hungary.'
It is worth mentioning that the term 'Greater Hungary' refers to the territories that were part of the Kingdom of Hungary. The country lost these territories under the Treaty of Trianon, signed on June 4, 1920, between the victorious states of World War I and defeated Hungary.
