Turn the Page on Hostility: EU Calls on Armenia and Azerbaijan
The EU welcomes the numerous steps taken by the leadership of Armenia and Azerbaijan aimed at resolving their differences. This was stated by Peter Stano, the official representative of the EU's diplomatic service, in a statement made in connection with the second anniversary of the end of the 44-day war in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict zone.
"On this occasion, the EU remembers all the Armenian and Azerbaijani victims of the conflict over the past 30 years. Fully aware of this difficult legacy, the EU calls on both sides to turn the page on hostility and continue their reconciliation efforts to prevent further unnecessary loss of human life and damage," the statement says.
The diplomat emphasized that although the negotiations are complex, it is important to agree on the next steps. "The European Union also welcomes the many steps taken by the leadership of Armenia and Azerbaijan to overcome their differences and achieve lasting and sustainable peace in the region. The EU values their sustained engagement in ongoing negotiations at various levels and formats. Although these negotiations are obviously complicated and will take time, it is crucial not to lose momentum, agree on concrete steps forward, and ensure a safe, secure, and prosperous environment for the benefit of the entire region's population," wrote Peter Stano.
The statement also calls on the parties to soften their rhetoric and refrain from escalating tensions. "In still fragile circumstances, with the wounds of the last 30 years not yet healed, the EU reiterates its call to the parties to temper their rhetoric and avoid any unnecessary escalation of tensions, including refraining from threats or accusations against each other, as well as military provocations and actions," the EU statement reads.
The diplomat emphasizes that the EU will continue its active participation in the resolution process. "The EU will continue its active engagement, responding to the wishes of both sides and supporting the work towards a comprehensive and just resolution of all outstanding issues, including through the personal efforts of European Council President Charles Michel, High Representative Josep Borrell, EU Special Representative Toivo Klaar, as well as through other EU mechanisms," the statement concludes.
