Elephants Found Village-Made Liquor in the Jungle, Drank and Got Drunk

In India, more than twenty elephants have gotten drunk after consuming a homemade alcoholic beverage crafted by villagers. As a result, the giants collapsed to the ground and fell asleep. A group of 24 elephants was roaming the jungles of eastern Odisha when they came across large clay pots filled with traditional ‘muhua’ liquor, reports the Daily Mail.

Residents of Salipada village had left the alcoholic containers in the jungle for fermentation. However, upon their later return to the site, the villagers were met with a surprising scene: the jars were broken, and the drunken elephants were sprawled around the shards.

The locals were unable to wake the animals from their deep slumber. The elephants only managed to get up when wildlife department officials arrived and began beating drums. Eventually, the elephants were able to stand and slowly walked back into the forest.

According to one local, elephants have previously consumed ‘muhua’. “They love it. It’s pure, tasty, and strong,” said Kartik Satyanarayan, the executive director of Wildlife SOS, to The Times. He noted that some elephants have become addicted to ‘muhua’ and have started a wild search for alcohol.
