Rare Wolf Species Appears in Armenia, Even Attacking Domestic Dogs

The director of the "Arpi Lake National Park", Musheg Muradyan, informed Aravot.am that the number of wolves in the area has increased. They have caused significant damage to the residents of Shaghik village by attacking 40 livestock.

He also mentioned that employees of the "Arpi Lake National Park" have spotted 4 bluish wolves and one black wolf. "Local residents and our staff confirm that a black wolf has never been seen in our area. This species is new to us," said Musheg Muradyan.

Ghazaros Ghazaryan, a supervisor in the rapid response team of the "Arpi Lake National Park", noted that wolves have caused significant harm not only to the residents of Shaghik village but to all surrounding villages as well. "Various packs of wolves have appeared, and there are many of them. Along with bluish wolves, there is also a black wolf. According to literature, black wolves have not existed in nature; they are new and only found in Canada as hybrids resulting from crossbreeding. Now they have reached our area, but we don’t know if they came from Turkey or Georgia. Bluish wolves are not new to our territory; they are large, weighing up to 80-90 kilograms. The wolves from Yerevan and surrounding areas, including Artsakh, are smaller, with the largest in our region weighing 50-60 kilograms, making them quite impressive in appearance.

Last year, there were 8 wolves in one pack, but later I saw there were 13; their territories are divided among them. Two are solitary, stray, elderly wolves that might have been expelled from their pack or have separated by themselves. There are smaller packs of 4 and 7, but it is difficult to notice and count them with the naked eye. We also have lightly marked reddish wolves, which have always been in high areas; only the black wolf is new in this territory. I have only seen the black wolf in Yerevan's zoo; I don't know where they brought it from, but now it has appeared in our nature," Ghazaros Ghazaryan stated.
