Peskov on Russia-Turkey Cooperation

Gas cooperation continues to remain at the agenda of high-level discussions between Russia and Turkey. This information was provided by Dmitry Peskov, the press secretary of the Russian President.

Previously, Russian President Vladimir Putin indicated that Russia could move gas transit from the "Nord Stream" to the Black Sea region and Turkey. The Russian president discussed this idea with Erdogan, and they have tasked their teams to develop the issue in detail and promptly.

"As for these matters, including issues related to gas supply, they are indeed on the agenda at both high and working levels. Communications are ongoing," Peskov said.

He reported that details regarding the creation of a gas hub on Turkish territory are being worked out, emphasizing that a significant part of the project is related to gas commercialization.

"The interest of both countries in creating a gas hub was emphasized during the recent meeting of the two presidents in Astana, and the details are being developed. We know that there is a very crucial part related to gas sales. Once this segment is clarified, the outlines of this hub will become clear," Peskov noted.

According to him, Russia and Turkey understand there is a global environment in the gas market, and no one intends to step outside the bounds of rationality.

Peskov stated that the Kremlin does not see grounds to fear that Turkey could exploit its dominant position in the gas market.

"Our Turkish partners understand this, and we understand it as well, and thus we see no grounds for such concerns here," he stated.

The Russian president's press secretary also pointed out that the "TurkStream" gas pipeline system has significant potential for expansion if necessary.

"We are connected with Turkey through one of the largest gas pipeline systems in operation now—the 'TurkStream,' which has substantial potential for expansion if needed," Vladimir Putin's press secretary said.

Peskov also reminded that Turkey has not joined the West's anti-Russian sanctions and is one of the largest recipients of gas from Russia.

"Turkey occupies a position different from the collective West countries. Turkey retains the opportunity to use its mediating services. Turkey adheres to its national interests regarding the continuation of trade and economic relations with our country; it has not joined the collective West's sanctions practices, and in this regard, it stands out favorably for both the Turkish people and our bilateral relations," the press secretary of the Russian President said.
