EU Reveals Details on Observers Deployed at Armenian-Azerbaijani Border
The European Union has published details regarding the observation mission deployed at the border with Azerbaijan in Armenia.
The statement notes that the EU monitoring capacities in Armenia will implement two main objectives: first, to support the strengthening of trust between Armenia and Azerbaijan by monitoring both sides' adherence to the ceasefire; and second, through regular and ad-hoc reports on developments related to the ceasefire, the EU team will monitor the situation in the border areas between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
This will enable the EU to better support the work of the border commissions of both sides. Only civilian observers will be deployed on the Armenian side of the internationally recognized border between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
The EU observers will present their observations regarding what is happening at the border, including issues related to human rights, but will not assume the role of a decision-maker, instead, they will relay their observations about the situation to European structures and services.
The statement also mentions that the EU is closely engaged in managing the peace process between the two sides based on agreements between Armenia and Azerbaijan.
