Why the Relationship Between Sasun Khachatryan’s Brother and Karen Andreasyan Has Become Tense: 'Hayots Ashkharh'

'Hayots Ashkharh' newspaper reports that peace is elusive in the Supreme Judicial Council of Armenia. According to our information, tensions exist between Davit Khachatryan, brother of Supreme Judicial Council member and head of the Anti-Corruption Committee Sasun Khachatryan, and newly appointed Supreme Judicial Council President Karen Andreasyan.

Our sources indicate that on October 7, Davit Khachatryan also sought to become the president of the council. Informed sources tell us that on that day, three judicial council members supported Khachatryan's appointment, while the others voted for Andreasyan, who was dispatched by the government to the Supreme Judicial Council.

These and other factors have contributed to a tense atmosphere within the council. It’s worth recalling that on October 10, Grigor Bekmezyan resigned from his position as a member of the Supreme Judicial Council, stating, 'Having analyzed events from recent months, as well as processes from the last week, I have come to the conclusion that the Supreme Judicial Council is no longer the body stipulated by the Constitution and the Judicial Code.'

We sought a comment from Karen Andreasyan regarding the unhealthy environment within the Supreme Judicial Council and his tense relations with Davit Khachatryan. 'I do not comment,' Mr. Andreasyan briefly said.

Note that on October 6, former Minister of Justice Karen Andreasyan, nominated by the ruling 'Civil Contract' faction, was elected as a member of the Supreme Judicial Council in the National Assembly. The following day, on October 7, Andreasyan was elected president of the Supreme Judicial Council through a secret ballot.
