Putin and Aliyev to Meet

Russian President Vladimir Putin will participate in the CIS summit in Astana and a meeting dedicated to strengthening cooperation and confidence in Asia, where he will meet with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev on October 13, as reported by the news agency RIA Novosti, citing Putin's assistant for international affairs, Yuri Ushakov.

“A meeting with Azerbaijani President Aliyev is scheduled,” Ushakov told reporters. He noted that the leaders last met on October 7 in St. Petersburg during an informal CIS summit, but they agreed to meet in Astana for a more detailed discussion.

According to him, relations between the countries are developing in a constructive manner. The Kremlin representative emphasized that the negotiations will address not only bilateral cooperation but also Armenian-Azerbaijani relations. He pointed out that Russia is “actively and in every way contributing to the normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia.”

Ushakov also mentioned that Russia is one of Azerbaijan's main foreign economic partners. In 2021, trade between the two countries grew by 16.1 percent, reaching $3.4 billion. From January to August of this year, trade volume amounted to $2.2 billion, which is an increase of 11.5 percent compared to the previous year. More than 900 joint ventures operate in Azerbaijan, and the volume of Russian investments in the country is approximately $4.5 billion.
