EU to Discuss Sending Civil Mission to Armenia-Azerbaijan Border: Toivo Klaar
It is expected that today, on October 11, EU member states' ambassadors will meet in Brussels to discuss and decide on sending a civilian mission to Armenia. The civilian mission is intended to be deployed along the border with Azerbaijan, to build trust and facilitate border delimitation efforts. This was stated on Monday by the EU Special Representative for the South Caucasus, Toivo Klaar, during a meeting of the European Parliament’s Committee on Foreign Affairs, as reported by EurAsia Daily.
“The decision to send a mission still needs to be approved by the member states (EU) through the Political and Security Committee. The full support of member states, as well as the European Parliament, is crucial for implementing the European Union's peacekeeping efforts,” Klaar added.
An agreement to send a civilian mission to Armenia was reached last week during negotiations between the leaders of Armenia, Azerbaijan, France, and the President of the European Council in Prague. According to the quadrilateral statement, Armenia has agreed to deploy an EU civilian mission along the border with Azerbaijan. Baku, which had previously rejected the proposal to deploy international observers in the region, has promised to cooperate “as far as it concerns itself.”
