Instead of 27, the draft proposes to raise the conscription age to 28
The government proposes to increase the conscription age by one year, changing it from the current 27 to 28 years.
During the presentation of the draft amendments to the law on "Military Service and the Status of Military Personnel" and related laws to the National Assembly today, Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports Vahram Dumanyan stated that this need has arisen because students who receive deferrals based on academic success are often conscripted into the army before completing their postgraduate studies.
"This problem has emerged because the duration of general education has become 12 years, while the age of 27 was determined at a time when general education lasted only 10 years. This leads to artificial solutions, as in the second year of postgraduate studies, students try to complete their dissertation in any way possible to consider that cycle closed," Dumanyan said.
The draft amendments to the law on "Military Service and the Status of Military Personnel" and related laws were accepted by the Armenian government in July this year and sent to the National Assembly for discussion. The package of bills was approved by the parliament in the first reading last week.
