Putin Signs Decrees Recognizing Independence of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia Regions

The President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, has signed decrees recognizing the Kherson and Zaporizhzhia regions as independent territories.

"In accordance with international universal principles and norms, recognizing and affirming the principle of equal rights and self-determination of peoples enshrined in the UN Charter, and taking into account the will of the people of the Kherson region, I have decided to affirm the results of the referendum held on September 27, 2022, regarding the recognition of the sovereignty and independence of the Kherson region," reads the decree from the President of the Russian Federation.

A similar decree was signed regarding the recognition of the sovereignty and independence of the Zaporizhzhia region. The referendums for the inclusion of the Donetsk People's Republic (DPR), Lugansk People's Republic (LPR), Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia regions into the Russian Federation were held from September 23 to 27.
