US Embassy in Armenia Calls on Azerbaijan to Withdraw Troops to Original Positions

The US Embassy in Armenia has responded to "News" inquiries regarding Azerbaijan's recent aggression. In answer to the question, "How do you assess Azerbaijan's actions against Armenia's sovereign territory?" the US Embassy stated, "The conflict cannot be resolved through military means, and the use of force is unacceptable. We regret the human losses, including numerous civilian casualties within Armenia's territory. We are pleased that our high-level engagement with both Azerbaijan and Armenia helped the parties establish a ceasefire, and we remain engaged and encourage the work needed to achieve lasting peace."

When asked what the US diplomatic mission's position is regarding the illegal presence of Azerbaijani armed forces in Armenia's sovereign territory, the Embassy responded, "We call on Azerbaijan to withdraw its troops to their original positions. We urge an end to military operations and to work towards resolving all outstanding issues between Armenia and Azerbaijan through continued peaceful negotiations. The United States is prepared to do everything possible to support these efforts."

Responding to the question, "What is your stance on Azerbaijan's targeting of civilian settlements and infrastructure in Armenia, resulting in casualties?" the Embassy replied, "We have personally seen the damage inflicted on civilian infrastructure in Armenia and have seen reports of casualties and injuries among civilians, which deeply concern us both ways and underscore the need to prevent further hostilities and the importance of diplomatic engagement."

Azerbaijani forces have taken Armenian servicemen captive in Armenia's sovereign territory, reports of torture against them have surfaced, and they have yet to be returned to the Armenian side. In response to the question, "What is your position on these matters?" the US diplomatic mission stated, "We have seen reports of the capture and torture of Armenian servicemen. The immediate and unconditional return of those captured in last week’s attacks, as well as the return of other prisoners, is a vital step toward achieving lasting peace. The United States condemns any manifestation of torture at any time or place and calls on governments to unequivocally uphold their international obligations and put an end to the impunity associated with these crimes."
