U.S. Comments on Actions Along the Armenian-Azerbaijani Border and in Armenian Settlements

The spokesperson of the U.S. State Department, Ned Price, addressed a journalist's question during a daily briefing regarding the actions of the Azerbaijani armed forces and the severe humanitarian situation created by the Armenian-Azerbaijani clashes.

In response, spokesperson Price underscored that the situation remains very concerning, as reported by Voice of America. “We are deeply troubled by the ongoing attacks along the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, which we have witnessed for the second consecutive day. We are particularly worried about continued reports of casualties among the civilian population within Armenia,” he stated.

“As you know, Secretary Blinken had the opportunity to speak with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan earlier this week, immediately after military actions began. He expressed our concerns regarding the military operations along their mutual border, including reports of shelling within Armenia. He urged President Aliyev to withdraw forces from the border, to immediately cease military operations that could endanger civilians, and to work towards resolving all issues between Armenia and Azerbaijan through peaceful negotiations.”

According to Price, “In this context, we have previously made it clear to both leaders and at all levels that this conflict cannot have a military resolution. We have urged both sides to refrain from further military actions and engage in dialogue and diplomacy.”

“We remain deeply engaged. Ambassador Riker, our senior advisor on conflict negotiations, is still in Baku. He met with Azerbaijan's senior leadership yesterday, September 13, and today. Ambassador Riker met with President Aliyev in Baku yesterday. Deputy Assistant Secretary Donfried spoke with Azerbaijan’s Foreign Minister Bayramov today at noon, and we are committed to steps aimed at promoting a peaceful and prosperous future for the South Caucasus,” Price added.
