Blinken Blames Russia: Statement on Developments at the Armenia-Azerbaijan Border
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has responded to reporters' questions regarding his phone conversations with the leaders of Armenia and Azerbaijan in connection with clashes at the Armenia-Azerbaijan border, as well as Russia's role in the situation. Voice of America reports.
In his response, the Secretary stated, “As for Armenia and Azerbaijan, yes, I spoke with Prime Minister Pashinyan of Armenia and President Aliyev of Azerbaijan yesterday evening their time early in the morning. We again witnessed an outbreak of military actions, something that is not beneficial for anyone. It is not in the interests of the Azerbaijani people, the Armenian people, and of course, it is not in the interests of the broader region. I spoke with both of them and urged them to do everything possible to pull back from the confrontations and return to discussions about building lasting peace between their countries. At this moment, our special envoy is in the region, working with both countries. I will be in close contact with them, and I hope we can bring the conflict back to the negotiation table and return to efforts to build peace.”
In response to a reporter’s question regarding Russia's involvement and the concerns associated with it, the Secretary said:
“We are always concerned when Russia tries to somehow intervene, distract attention from Ukraine. That always concerns us. But if Russia can truly use its influence for good—to again calm the situation, cease the violence, and call for a sincere engagement in peacebuilding efforts—then that would be a positive step,” concluded the U.S. Secretary of State.
